ILP "Participation"- lynda.com tutorial

1. Activity log

  •  Start watching Mike Hathorn: 3D Printing in the Classroom
  •  A teacher is making a tutorial on the 3D printing software named Sketch Up
  •  Explains how students now-a-days are consumers of technology and how he wants to make students producers of technology
  • Students get to create the curriculum of their course at Hardford High School
  • Students walk around town and take pictures, they then transfer those pictures onto a software called Sketch Up
  • Students model their own objects and then get to use the 3D printer to create them
  • The class uses 3D printing to create models of their town, these models are uploaded on Google Earth
  • To make the class more history based the students have to find someone to talk to and get information about the building they took a picture and sketched a model of
  • The students conduct an interview so when people click on that building they are informed of the building's history
  • This class gives students technology skills, knowledge of history of their town and how to talk and interview people
  • Teacher noticed more students standing than sitting while working with the 3D printers and computers
  • He found out that people have more brain activity when they are standing versus when they are sitting
  • The software allows the students to get creative even when the teacher assigns a certain topic for the assignment
  • Students are not doing the same assignments, they have a little freedom and creativity which allows them to get deeper into their work
  • Since each student is working on a different project it allows the teacher to talk more one on one with the student and give them suggestions on how to fix their work
  • Students also use math when they go out into the town and approximate how many feet long a building is to make an accurate model with a pacer
  • Students are having fun but also realize it is important that they are learning how to use this technology now for the future
  • The principal sees that the students who do not do well in core academic classes or have no interests in school succeed in this type of technology class
  • The teacher tries to show that instead of consuming this technology products that they can actually make them
  • Examples: iPhone case, amplifier, building, board game piece, etc.
  • The teacher even brings the students to Tech Jam, a showcase to show off their pieces and to see other students and companies technological products
  • At the showcase the students get to explain to others how 3D printers work and show them their products that are currently being made
  • It allows the students to demonstrate the knowledge they have learned in class
  • Sketch Up and 3D printers allow students to be innovative
  • These independent and creative skills will follow these students into their careers and future lives
  • This tutorial helps show how teachers can turn students who are technology consumers into technology creators

2. The learning experience these students get are like no other. They get to learn about relevant history that pertains to them since it is about their town. They also get to learn about new technologies and how to use them for innovative purposes. The learning experience these students get show them that there is more than just lecture and discussion based ways of learning. They get to be creative while still learning important aspects and skills they will need in the future. This class allows students to take a break from other repetitive classes and proves that different ways of learning increases interests in all students. Students get a lot out of this hands on class that they would not be able to get in a traditional classroom setting.

ILP "Design" - Glogster

Glogster is a website that lets you create online multimedia posters. I want to be a Kindergarten teacher so I created a class poster with all my students pictures and names on it. Teachers tend to make these at the beginning of the school year that have to do with the theme of their classroom. Since it is a multimedia poster I was also able to embed a Youtube video that went along with my poster's theme. I decided to make my poster theme a farm and used the "Old McDonald Had A Farm" song since most preschoolers learn this song in preschool.

Here is a link to my Glogster!

As a teacher I will probably use the Data Collection tool for interacting and keeping in touch with my students' parents. I want to be a kindergarten teacher so my students probably won't be at the right comprehension level to get results from. But my students' parents can use my surveys so I can see what their child needs to work on the most and how much they have improved in certain subject areas throughout the year. I can take these results and focus on a subject area more in depth for a while if enough students need the extra practice. The Data Collection tool will help me improve my classroom not only for their particular school year but for my future classes based on their perspective. The answers that I receive through Data Collection tools will help me to evaluate the aspects of my classroom that are effective and the aspects that are not effective. Their responses will help me change my teaching style to better fit my students.

After reviewing my classmates' blogs something I found interesting is that even though we had the same assignments due, like all of our journals and assignments like PowerPoint and concept maps they all looked different. I learned through my classmates' blogs that there is not only one way of completing work correctly, which showed me that there are different ways to go about teaching and you just have to find what works best for you and your students.

The next technology-related skill I would like to learn next is how to use Promethium boards in a lesson to make it more interactive. I know how to use the Promethium boards and the touch features but I would like to be able to know how to make a lesson interactive where students can come up and solve problems instead of doing PowerPoints.

I think I will be able to achieve my future educational technology-related goals is through experience. The required internship that I will have will allow me to experience a real classroom setting and allow me to adjust to the the technologies and procedures of a school. As a freshman at Florida State University I have already learned so much and I can only imagine what else I can learn about educational technology the next three years here.

"The Flipped Classroom" is a instructional technique that makes students watch instructional videos at home or outside of the classroom so that the teacher can review concepts in class and have time to do more interactive assignments in class through discovery learning. To refer back to chapter 10 and the instructional design it discussed, the teacher can tell the students to listen to podcasts or watch vodcasts away from the classroom and then students can write blog posts or use wikis to discuss the information they learned on their own before coming to class and having a group discussion on the subject matter. This type of instructional technique is efficient because it makes the students learn the material before coming to class so that class time can be used to answer any questions the students have and allows them to discuss the topic more in depth in class. A source of educational videos is http://www.watchknowlearn.org/.

An interesting web-based resource I might use for professional development is http://www.discoveryeducation.com/. They have so much valuable resources and updates on new technologies and happenings for teachers. The website is friendly and offer community support for teachers on textbooks, professional development and programs that can benefit their students. Discovery is an amazing publication that has their own educational videos and news updates for teachers to use if they are relevant to their classroom as well.

One new skill I acquired from completing the PowerPoint Interaction assignment is using the hyperlink and action button feature to connect my slides together seamlessly. I also learned that PowerPoint is not only useful for presentations of information on bulleted lists but you can make games and stories out of it as well. I liked that I got to experiment and use PowerPoint for something else besides a bulleted presentation but this was my first time using it for interaction purposes so I can improve how I present my PowerPoint interaction better. I can use this assignment in my future career by creating a game that corresponds to the lesson rather than just coming up with a story where the reader can take different paths in.

After reading chapter 12 I believe the technology advancement that hold the biggest promises for education is 3D printing. 3D printers allow people to create objects out of raw materials through the use of computer-aided software. 3D printing can be utilized in education by allowing educators to easily create models and visuals for their students that could otherwise be inaccessible. 3D printers allow students to be able to hold and play with historical artifacts such as dinosaur bones instead of just seeing pictures being projected while a teacher is lecturing.

The digital divide is the gap between people who have access to technology and the people who do not have access to technology. This gap is not only seen in developing countries, it is seen in the United States as well. I am fortunate enough to have access to a computer, I have my own laptop in which I bring to all of my classes. Since I own a laptop I also gain computer skills that I need in order to do my school work and other online activity that I wouldn't necessarily know if I was not surrounded by technology. I am also fortunate enough to have Internet access in my home back in my hometown but I also have it on campus at Florida State University. I am on the side of the digital divide that has access to technology because I grew up in an upper-middle class area where my school provided computers and other technologies for me to use. I think the digital divide will affect my future classroom because I grew up with technology. I might have to change the way I will teach say a kindergarten classroom depending on the location, a suburban school and a urban school will have different technologies inside the classroom as well as what the students have access to at home. In order to address the digital divide I would have to accommodate to my students, if I teach a class in the suburbs then I might create a class website and post important information for the parents to see and homework for the students to do. But if I teach in a urban school then I might send home letters with the students for their parents to see instead of having a class website where the parents may not be able to see.

The PowerPoint for Information Dissemination assignment allowed to be gain more new skills than any other assignment we have done thus far. While I have looked through PowerPoints before that my teachers have created in the past, I have never created one that resembles a lesson plan. I learned that I cannot put everything I want to say on the PowerPoint. The PowerPoint is just a visual representation of what I am talking about and has the main ideas on it. The only aspect I didn't like about this assignment was having to come up with a lesson on my own, I didn't know what I should talk about exactly. I liked that I was able to be creative and mess around with the different features on PowerPoint though. I can improve for the next time I do a PowerPoint by having a detailed topic and know exactly what I want people to learn from it, it will help me not take as much time to make. I can use PowerPoint in my future career to help make lectures and discussions not seem as boring to students, it will allow them to stay focus and take notes from.

I could use PowerPoint to support student learning and achievement at each level of Bloom's Taxonomy. For my students to remember information I taught them before I can post the PowerPoint to my class website where they can go back and look and it and remember the discussion we had in class. For my students to understand information I would say minimal information in my PowerPoint and go into detail about that information by talking while going through the PowerPoint in class. For my students to apply the information I will take the information I wrote in my PowerPoint and use it in other situations during class time. For my students to be able to analyze the information I would use worksheets and other homework assignments that correlate to what was brought up in my PowerPoint. For my students to be able to evaluate the information I present in my PowerPoint we will have open discussions afterwards so they can critique and judge what they just learned. For my students to be able to create original work I will give them homework assignments such as the ones I receive in my EME 2040 class where I can blog about what I learn in class and create other things such as wikis and websites.

Adaptive technologies are the different types of technologies and services offered to learners with different disabilities. Adaptive technologies are used to support learners who need different technologies or tools in order for them to perform the same tasks as other students. Some examples of adaptive technologies are 3D printers, voice recognition software on computers, text to speech software which reads out-loud to a student, and others. I do not know anyone who uses these technologies themselves but I have gotten a chance to see some of them in the Sandbox in the College of Education on campus. Some challenges I perceive using adaptive technologies in my classroom are that not all of my students may need these technologies and it may single out the student or distract the other students. I also can see it being hard for a student to have access to in a public school.

By working on the Web Page Design assignment I acquired skills such as being creative and learning how to put a website together that does not correlate with the acronym CRAP that we learned in class. I liked that I was able to think of what an actual teacher would have on their website but I didn't like that Weebly wouldn't cooperate with me sometimes. For example, it was difficult for me to change the colors of different texts and I found it harder to change layouts on my laptop than it was on a desktop. I can improve it next time because I will be able to have specific content that I feel is important to put on a class website rather than making it up myself. After completing the Web Page Design assignment I will be able to create a more easy to look at website that will be used for my real classroom.

Most schools require teachers to maintain a set of class pages on the school website. I visited my high school, Stoneman Douglas High's website page, douglashigh.browardschools.com. Stoneman Douglas High is a high school that teaches grades ninth through twelfth. The school website has a section that lists all of the teacher's websites categorical according to the subject that they teach. Most of the teacher's websites only included information that pertained to their specific class and students since the school's homepage contains all of the announcements and information about what is occurring at the school. I went through some of the teacher's websites and some were more extravagant than others. All of the teachers websites were similar in context; they all uploaded notes and other printable work for their class, calendars about upcoming assignments and links to other resourceful websites for their students. This specific teacher also separates her website into the different types of classes she teaches but makes the website welcoming to all of them. She keeps it simple but inspirational with quotes and fun clip art as well as giving a supplies list at the bottom in case any of her students feel like donating to her classroom.

I can see myself using technology to accomplish my professional responsibilities more efficiently and more effectively. I will use products such as the Microsoft Office suite, which are applications used on computers in order to create spreadsheets and other useful organizational tools to keep me up-to-date with everything going on in my classroom. I will also make a website that is organized and inviting to parents of my students who I assume will be on the younger side of the spectrum. I want to teach elementary school so I have to make my website simple and full of graphics. With these two types of technological tools I will be using in my classroom I will be implementing the skills of creativity and alignment into my work.

By working on the Web Evaluation Wiki I was able to better judge a website on how credible they are and where they got their information from. I am now able to not trust everything that I read from a website and spend more time checking out a website before I trust what I read from it. I liked that I was able to work on this assignment in a group for once, I was able to socialize with my peers in the class and help one another. The only aspect of this assignment that I didn't like was the fact that it was hard to navigate around the website and that it was hard to work on the same assignment with my peers at the same time. I can improve for next time when I am looking at a website to check who the website got their information from. Something I learned from the website evaluation assignment that I can use in my future career to to make sure I evaluate a website before presenting it to my class. I do not want to show them something that is unprofessional or inaccurate. I want to take the time and find the best websites for my students to look at and learn from.

Web 2.0 tools are no longer an optional classroom element due to the ELA standards. Some Web 2.0 technologies that I think are useful in the classroom and help support teacher professional development are blogs, they allow students to think twice before posting their homework and written work because they are out there on the Internet for everyone to see. Even if the blog is private and only for classmates and the teacher to view it still stands the same, any one of them could read each others work at any given time. Also, podcasts are another useful technology because they allow students to hear someone else talk about a subject matter which they can access multiple times if they ever need to refresh their memory on a subject.A Web 2.0 technology that may not be as useful in the classroom is social media platforms, while they are nice to allow students to explore news and media and share it with each other it can also expose students to unwanted content. Social media is a Web 2.0 tool that should be monitored and used for only age appropriate students. One concern with using these tools in the classroom that the podcast talked about is using tools like YouTube and blogs which can be a passive approach in the way that students learn. There are other tools out there that allow students to interact with each other and make a more positive and direct approach to learning. To use these Web 2.0 tools effectively there must be a strong computer system made up of a strong hardware and random-access memory (RAM). The network storage should have storage space for each user that contains a cloud storage where each individual can login to a personal profile. This will all help students who use laptops and computers to have access to Web 2.0 tools.

A interesting Web 2.0 tool that I might use when teaching is https://kahoot.it/. Kahoot is a game-based learning website that allows teaching to create a "game" by typing in questions and multiple choice answers. Each question is timed as students pick an answer, the top five students are posted after the right answer is shown. The object of the game is to answer the question correctly and the fastest in order to get the most points.

While Kahoot is another great lesson reinforcer like iClicker, it does have a downside. Kahoot needs its users to have a mobile device or tablet which brings me back to the point that the Web 2.0 technologies are based on age appropriateness. Younger students may not have either one of these devices which means the teacher cannot use program. Also, you must make sure if your students are old enough that each of them has a device. But, it may cause problems because parents may take their children's devices away for punishment which will conflict with how the student performs in their classes who uses Kahoot.

While working on the last assignment, the Concept Mapping, I figured out that planning is very important. If your map starts to look chaotic then it will defeat the purpose of being an organized source of information for people to read easily. Also, if you want to change the layout of your map then you have to drag each piece of the map separately which takes time. I can improve next time by planning out which type of concept map would work better with the information I am trying to provide for students. But I did learn that study guides that are organized and well thought out can be of very good use for students which I will keep in mind for my future teaching career.

The standard I have chosen is SC.K.E.5 which states is about Earth in Space and Time. This standard is directed towards Kindergarten students when they are learning about science. The standard states, "Humans continue to explore Earth's place in space. Gravity and energy influence the formation of galaxies, including our own Milky Way Galaxy, stars, the Solar System, and Earth. Humankind's need to explore continues to lead to the development of knowledge and understanding of our Solar System," (Cpalms, http://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewIdea/Preview/486). One web-based resource my students could use to learn and comprehend this standard is http://www.glencoe.com/sites/common_assets/science/virtual_labs/E28/E28.swf. This virtual lab will allow students to grasp how big the universe is as well as to travel to the different planets. This lab would be a visual tool for when I'm teaching them that space is big and that planets are not that close together. The virtual lab would fall under the classification tools category of simulations because it allows students to experience space through a virtual interaction.

In my school work in the past I would always use Google as a search engine when searching for and evaluating Internet-based resources. While Google is not necessarily a scholar approved way to do research I still used similar methods that were explained in the podcast. While I have now learned about credible ways to do research through the FSU library with databases such as JSTOR, I still would try to use key words and phrases to narrow down my search. My methods from high school and now in college are similar to open sources that were mentioned in the podcast. Open sources is software that is freely available to the public, sites like Google are available to anyone with Internet access and has features such as Google Scholar to help people find resources that are appropriate. Databases like JSTOR that are provided to students who attend and pay tuition to universities will have access and are able to search for articles and resources that can back up a point a student is trying to write about.

A new skill I acquired while working on the Web Hunt assignment is that using quotation marks and other symbols I can narrow down my search which will help me cut down the time it takes me to find a website, video or image that I am looking for. What surprised me was that one word can really make a difference in your search results.
Web Hunt challenge:

1. Find a website that gives a virtual tour of the layers of the Earth.
2. You are teaching your students about the planets and the order in which they follow the sun. Find a website that allows you to make a diagram with pictures.
3. Find a website that allows you to make a class page to keep your students' parents updated.

The ELA technology standard I definitely feel the most prepared to teach with my prior existing knowledge is the "producing" tech standards SL.5 of using digital media. With the help of my EME 2040 class I have began to learn different ways in which I can use digital media and incorporate it into a learning environment. My professor has made me personally use digital media such as Twitter and my blog site to help us learn in class and grow as future educators. The ELA technology standard I wish to be more prepared for is the "consuming" tech standards L.5 of vocabulary and the use of context clues. I believe that this standard is especially important for the younger grades, the ones in which I hope to teach. I do not really know how to help students find the meaning of words through the use of context clues in the sentences that are around the word. I hope that in one of my future education classes I will learn to teach students how to use dictionaries as well as thesauruses.

Based on chapter 9 from my textbook, some of the technology software and applications I would like to use with my future students are blogs where students are able to type their thoughts out on a personal account where their work can be viewed by peers and they can leave each other encouraging and thoughtful comments. My blog right here is for my EME 2040 class and I think it is an excellent way to educate others as well as allowing me to form coherent ideas about the topics I learn in class. Another technology application I would like to use with my future students is a site like Edmodo, it replicates social media formatting but it is safe for educational use because students are not exposed to others' posts that are not monitored and may be inappropriate for their age group. The digital citizenship concepts I will need to address would be that my students should be able to demonstrate "netiquette" actions in their web interactions with each other. Whether they are commenting on each others' blog posts or commenting under a post I make to a website such as Edmodo my students should be polite and never disrespect one another. My students would be at a younger age where they may not be aware that the Internet is a big space where others can see your information and I would also have to teach them the skill of keeping their participate on the web private.

A new skill I acquired from working on the Newsletter Design assignment is how to organize a page that would be appealing for parents to read instead of throwing it in the garbage. Organization is key in a newsletter because if it is a big mess with a lot of words people will not be interested in reading it. What I liked about designing a newsletter is that I was able to be creative and make it appealing for others to read. I did not like this newspaper design assignment that much because I am not a teacher yet and it was difficult to come up with idea on what information teachers find useful and want their students' parents to know.  I know that it will be easier for me to improve next time because I now know the gist on the layout of a newspaper and will know what types of information I could put into a newsletter for parents. Something useful has come out of this assignment that I can use in my future career, how to greet and draw people into my newsletter in a formal yet playful manner.

As a student Microsoft Word has been useful when writing essays in my English classes. English classes are heavily research based and analyzing pieces of literature, Microsoft Word is an easy tool to use in order to get our thoughts across in essay form. I have seen teachers use Microsoft Word to help them create study guides, tests and quizzes, worksheets and assignment guidelines to help their students succeed in class.

My experiences with copyright has been mostly with citing author's work when using their words to advance my arguments in my papers. I use the words of another and quote them in order to attribute their work as not my own. Another experience I have with fair use of materials in an educational environment is when teachers show use videos during their lectures to help show a different light on the same subject. While the teacher may have not made the video it is for educational purposes and it is used for the purpose of teaching others and nothing is being used from the video for money. As a teacher who has to deal with these concepts in my own classroom and when creating my own instructional materials I will make sure that when I make PowerPoints and use videos or images that I do not own I will cite the place where I got them from and the author's name. Also, if I have students who use sources to create their own work I will make sure I teach them the correct way to cite sources as well as use programs such as Turnitin.com to catch students who are not creating their own work.

A new skill I acquired through the use of personal learning networks and specifically Twitter is that we can have access to a variety of credible news and learning companies and organizations right at our fingertips. Twitter is a microblogging website that allows users to post short posts of up to 140 characters, this allows users to have access to news and information quickly as some people "live tweet" at events. What I have learned about personal learning networks that can benefit myself as well as my students in my future teaching career is to be more creative with assigning work for my students and allow them to publish their work that allows their peers to review and give positive feedback on.

Computers play an important part in the experience of education because it is another method in which are able to learn material from their instructors. Computers expands the ways in which students can learn and gain knowledge from their instructors. Some examples would be textbooks that have audio features, class websites due to the Internet, greater access to a wider variety of education videos as well as technology boards in the classroom that students can actively engage with. While computers and technology are advancing the ways in which teachers are able to explain and show material to their students, there are some critical concerns.  For example, teachers who have been in the profession longer may not have the technology literacy that is up-to-date with their students who are born more into the Digital Age. Another example is that students have more access to smart devices that are portable and make distract them in class during times in which they need to be paying attention to their instructor. Finally, another example, is that teachers may implement technology into their lesson plans that may not necessarily suit their students needs because of their cognitive stage. I agree with the issues raised in the first two chapters of our textbook, while technology is advancing and has some beneficial tools instructors can use in the classroom it should be limited because at the end of the day students learn from the instructors and not on a screen from a computer. Also, technology use in a classroom varies based on the students' cognitive thinking stage and their ages. So younger children need hands on learning and more basic skill training than older children who already have their basic skills mastered and are ready to learn more in depth.

One ISTE standards that stood out to me is the fifth point for student standards, which talks about digital citizenship. When further reading about what digital citizenship will create for students the website said, "demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning." I thought this standard that students should adopt was interesting because I do not believe that students necessarily need to understand and use technology in order to pursue greater learning to enhance their education. While technology makes it easier for students to do just that I believe there are also ways around that in which they can expand their knowledge. Another ISTE standard that seems outside of my current skill set is the second point for teacher standards, which talks about designing and developing digital age learning experiences and assessments for students. When further reading about developing such activities for students the website said, "provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching." While I am an active user of technology myself I am not an expert yet in which I can find ways to implement it in my future classroom. The education courses in which I still have to take will hopefully work to my advantage and help me be able to use my technology skills and incorporate them into my teaching later down on the road.

I agree with the label "digital native" for today's youth because while they all may not necessarily have great skills in how to operate technology, they are all exposed to it and the benefits of technology. To me being a digital native means to be someone who is growing up in a time period where technology and the digital world are changing the ways in which people live. I do see differences in people like myself who are digital natives compared to older generations who are digital immigrants. Teachers, who are digital immigrants, use technology at a much slower pace than some digital natives. This causes serious problems in the classroom, students lose attention when teachers have to take time out of their lessons to fix technological problems or if they do not know what they are doing. Also, teachers do not use the new advances in technology to their advantage, there is a greater variety in ways in which they can creatively teach students but they do not. This hinders the students learning because they get bored of the repetition of the same ways in which teachers teach their lessons. Since I am born as a digital native so I anticipate that my future students will not encounter the same consequences I faced as a student who had digital immigrants as teachers. I anticipate using a greater amount of resources that technology offers so that my students will be sharp and pay attention because they will always have new and creative ways to learn the lessons I teach them.

My prior experiences with technology are with yearbook and journalism classes, I mostly worked with photos and advertisements so I am more knowledgeable with Photoshop and InDesign more than any other computer programs. I also have worked with Excel before and Word obviously for academic purposes. While I do have prior experience with technology I do not feel comfortable nor strong enough with technology, I have a lot to learn.

My main goal for this class is to become more knowledge with all the different programs that are offered on computers. I want to know multiple programs in order to create a innovative and creative classroom when I become a teacher. I also want to be able to incorporate technology into my classroom and to use it easily so I don't take time away from teaching students. Also with my greater knowledge of technology I might be able to answer any questions and solve any problems my students face while using it.

Today I learned from my learning style is that I am not a global learning, I cannot look at the bigger picture before I learn something. I find that to be confusing and that I am more of a sequential learner, which means jumping around from different topics confuses me. I also learned that I am a sensing learner, which means I can grasp concepts better when I understand how it can be used in the real world and not just in the classroom. I also learned that I am more of an active learner, which suggests I am better at study in a group. I will have to keep that in mind the next time I am studying.
